Saga Miami Concert reviews
A New (Old) Holiday Classic
I have been intrigued by the presentation of Handel's "Messiah" as a ballet, having performed it onstage in choruses and participated in "sing-alongs" as part of the audience.
Pleasantly surprised, I discovered that the entire "Messiah" was performed, with vignettes interpreting each section of the libretto, rather than just excerpts of the better-known parts. The live off-stage chamber orchestra, soloists, and chorus were superb, allowing for a focus on the visual aspects of the performance. The staging was minimalist, with evocative costumes. The first act depicted a late 18th/early 19th-century church service, while the second act portrayed the Passion, and the third act, the Resurrection.
The Saga features excellent soloists, although the corps de ballet lacks the precision and synchrony of more experienced companies, showing several technical errors during the performance. Despite their economic constraints, live music performances like this one bring added value compared to pre-recorded accompaniment.
Handel's "Messiah" is typically known as a holiday standard for its musical performance alone. However, the ballet interpretation adds a special visual element, making it even more recommendable. I highly recommend experiencing this unique presentation.
